In my experience, the most transformative learning has occurred outside of the classroom. All too often students and teachers a like are so fixed on grades, grading, reading, papers, and proof reading that the world existing outside of the university almost begins to seem foreign. Re-conceptualizing our role with communities as an institution is an exciting one; one that I believe can be done well when balanced with purposeful design and collaboration. I firmly believe that to make lasting change and connections, we must enter into communes in which we feel we do not belong; gain trust, develop understanding and patience, distance our prescriptions from that of what the community really wants and needs, and humble ourselves.
