Welcomesburg: Gentrification Offsetting is a design-led research project that explores individual accountability and collective agency in urban communities experiencing gentrification and displacement. Using carbon offsetting as a useful analogy, the project playfully challenges individuals to consider the unintended consequences of their presence in communities and encourages a more sensitive and supportive way of engaging with their neighbors. The results are playful provocations that provide a platform for discussion, debate, sharing ideas about ultimately networking, as it searches for alternative solutions surrounding neighborhood and socio-economic dynamics.
How can you offset displacement in your neighborhood? How can you become a more inclusive neighbor? By exploring these and other questions, we examine what makes someone a “gentrifier” and what they can do about it.
